    Lovecraft's First Published Book, and His Only Book Published in His Lifetime

    H. P. Lovecraft. The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Illustrated by Frank A. Utpatel. Everett, Pennsylvania: Visionary Publishing Co., 1936. First edition ("Published, April, 1936" on the copyright page). Twelvemo. [14, blank], 158, [16, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth with silver lettering, with the title in capitals and lower case (one of two known bindings, Currey binding B, no priority). In the rare dust jacket on white paper with silver lettering on the front panel and spine matching that from the cloth binding, and with the illustration in yellow-green (Currey dust jacket variant 2, no priority). Jacket toned and thumbsoiled, front jacket panel chipped and torn, jacket worn, cloth quite rubbed, spine with indentation down the center, text a bit shaken. Skewed. Still, a very good copy in a somewhat tattered jacket. "Publisher states that approximately 400 copies were printed, of which about 200 were bound with the remainder later destroyed" (Currey). Currey, p. 324.
