    H. P. Lovecraft. Autograph Postcard Signed. Addressed to fellow horror writer, Clark Ashton Smith.

    More Information:

Quebec, Sept. 3 [?], 1933. Approximately 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Written in very tight cursive (twenty-eight lines) on recto of card (on the verso is a full-color image entitled "View from Parliament Buildings, Quebec, Canada"). With a "2 Cents" Canadian stamp, cancel and postmark (partially obscured by Lovecraft's writing). Addressed to Smith in Auburn, California U.S.A. in slanted cursive by Lovecraft in small cursive on an extreme slant. A few words smudged, else fine. Housed in custom-made cardboard case.

"Greetings from an Hyperborean Averoigne, O Hierophant of Tsathoggua! My aunt gave me a birthday present of a week's Emancipation from nursing responsibilities - by getting others to come in afterwards - + I have hastened to utilize my freedom in snatching at least one real trip from the brief + waning summer! Good old Quebec! There's no place like it! Admittedly [?] it's a Segment of the living past despite all the drawbacks of a slight American[?] self-consciousness. Delightful cool [?] weather so far - I'm reveling in the glamour of the centuries at its best! Stopped to see Cook briefly in Boston. May try to see Salem & Marblehead on the return trip. Home Thursday. ¶ R. F. Searight of "Brain in the Jar" fame has looked me up + wants me to help in his work.. I doubt if I can-he [?] toward science[?] -fiction - but have requested that he write you on the subject. ¶ I'm now seated on the ancient city ramparts of Quebec - almost light-headed with the medieval unreality of the scene! Ech-Pi-El".  The names in the greeting refer to locations or characters used by Smith in his cosmic horror writing. This card is an excellent look at a relatively happy (but unfortunately brief) moment in Lovecraft's life.
