    Description

Bram Stoker. The Mystery of the Sea. London: William Heinemann, 1902. First English edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "John Northcott / from Bram Stoker / 17.7.02." Octavo (7.25 x 4.75 inches; 184 x 120 mm.). [xii], [499], [1, blank], [32, ads] pages. Publisher's dark blue cloth, front board stamped in gilt and green, spine lettered in gilt, rear board stamped in blind. Cloth spine a bit toned; some edgewear to binding; some toning, light foxing to endleaves; gutter facing half-title starting; text a bit toned with some occasional creasing and thumbsoiling. Binding skewed. Overall, a very good copy. Northcott is listed in Stoker's biography of actor Henry Irving (for whom he served as secretary) as being one of the countless guests to one of Irving's banquets; it is possible that this is where Stoker and Northcott met. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
