    First U.S. edition. Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii] [1] 2-316 [317: blank] [318-320: ads] [note: first leaf is a blank]. Original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. Formerly, fantasy fiction collector and fan publisher Oswald Train's copy with his bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. A bright, very good or better copy.

    The U.S. edition, published in March 1915, consisted of 500 copies made up from the second printing of the UK edition printed in February 1915. The author's first book, first published in 1906. Collects ten stories. In 1927, when Derleth received this book, he was in the midst of an intensive study of recent supernatural fiction, a study which culminated in his bachelor's thesis for the University of Wisconsin, and which laid the foundation for his founding of Arkham House.
