The First Appearance in Book Form of Arthur Conan Doyle

[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle]. Dreamland and Ghostland: An Original Collection of Tales and Warnings from the Borderland of Substance and Shadow... London: George Redway, [1887]. First edition. Three octavo volumes. Original red cloth decoratively stamped in black on the front covers and title in gilt on the spines. Minor edge wear and some soiling to the bindings. Noticeable chipping of the cloth at each spine head, with a small chip to the rear joint of volume one. Spines sunned, but the gilt remains bright. Some hinges weak, with the front hinge of volume two partially split. Remnants of removed bookplate to front pastedowns. Inventory number "133.1" written in black marker to front cover of volume three. A few leaves roughly opened. Light crease to top corner of some leaves in volume one. Very occasional minor marginal thumb-soiling to text. Overall, a very good copy of a rare title.

A beautiful Victorian triple-decker, containing the first stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to appear in book form in England, and pre-dating the first printing of the first Sherlock Holmes story by a month. The Doyle stories in this collection are as follows: "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement", "The Great Kleinplatz Experiment", "Selecting a Ghost. The Ghost of Goresthorpe Grange", "The Mystery of Sasassa Valley", "The Captain of the Pole-Star" and "John Barrington Clowes." Green & Gibson C80; Sadleir 741
