    An Interesting Correspondence

[H. P. Lovecraft, subject]. Virgil Finlay. Four Autograph Letters, Signed. Four Pages, dated 15 April 1937, 15 May 1937, 6 June 1937, and 8 July 1937, plus one Autograph Postcard, Signed, dated 26 April 1937, all to Corwin Stickney. Accompanied by carbon copies of three typed letters from Stickney to Finlay. An archive showing both sides of a brief correspondence related to the posthumous publication of some Lovecraft and Lovecraft-related material. The letters and postcard are in near fine to fine condition.

More Information: Finlay was still in the early stages of a career that would make him the most celebrated illustrator in his day of fantasy fiction. Stickney was a precocious 15-year-old starting up a weird fanzine, Amateur Correspondent, the successor to Science-Fantasy Correspondent, whose two partners, Stickney and Willis Conover, had a falling out (which is detailed in these letters). Conover, another precocious teenager, had carried on a correspondence with Lovecraft, who thought his fanzine far superior to most others. Conover had arranged for the publication of some minor HPL material, material which Stickney inherited after he separated from Conover (for reasons detailed here). Finlay initially wrote in a huff, demanding the return of a portrait he had made of HPL, and a brief autobiography; but Stickney answered back in a soothing, professional manner which persuaded Finlay to let the matter go forward. An interesting glimpse of the earliest days of what became (and still is) a veritable industry, the printing of material by and about HPL. In Finlay's last letter to Stickney, he passes on news about copyright-infringement threats that August Derleth was already making to other would-be publishers.
