Horae B.M.V 1350 Illuminated Manuscript Leaf- Christ Carrying His Cross also picturing a Roman guard, His Mother Mary and two others. A miniature from a Book of Hours, France, 1440, manuscript on vellum, Latin text, 3" x 4.25". Arch-topped framed scene with decorative border burnished in gold, and a three-line illuminated initial also burnished in gold. The verso contains 15 lines of black and red text with one two-line and several smaller illuminated initials and an intricately decorated left border, burnished in gold. Each Book of Hours produced in medieval times was unique. It was a form of prayer book developed in the 14th century. This is a fine example of a miniature religious painting from one of these volumes. Some damp staining on lower right quadrant. ***** From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
