Horace McCoy. They Shoot Horses, Don't They? New York: Simon and Schuster, 1935. First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Jesse - / who is a guarantee / there'll be one angel / in heaven - / from Horace / in affection." Jesse identified as Jesse Lasky, Jr., by a previous dealer, both in a penciled note on the front pastedown and a display card laid into the book. Octavo (8 x 5 inches; 202 x 127 mm.). [vi], 186, [1], [3, blank] pages. Publisher's light brown cloth, spine lettered in black and ruled in red; front board ruled in black and red; top edge of the text block stained red, others trimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Spine just barely askew; corners and edges of the joints very softly bumped. Top stain very faintly faded; text block slightly pulled away from the cloth at the upper edge (though this seemingly does not affecting the integrity of the binding, which is still very tight); endpapers very faintly tanned in the gutter from binder's glue. Dust jacket spine panel dulled just a shade; folds very lightly worn, causing some loss of color but apparently not compromising the integrity of the jacket; trace edgewear; rear panel lightly rubbed; faint offsetting on the verso from the ruling on the covers. A near fine copy. The author's first book and a proletarian literature high-spot. Source for the 1969 Sydney Pollack film of the same name starring Jane Fonda. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.Shipping, Taxes, Terms and Bidding
