First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author for poet Alfred Mombert on the front free endpaper: "Gruss für / Alfred Mombert / von / H. Hesse / vii. 41." Octavo (8.25 x 5.25 inches; 210 x 135 mm.). 112 [113], [1, blank], [3, catalog], [1, blank], [1, printer's note] [1, blank] pages (note: pages 1 and 2 are blank). Publisher's light brownish gray linen, spine lettered in brown, front board decoratively stamped in brown; top edge stained red; in original dust jacket. Spine just barely askew; backstrip very faintly dulled; clean, almost invisible, short tear to linen along the rear joint (about one and one-quarter inches; boards slightly splayed; front board with a faint, narrow reddish stain in the illustrations and some minor brown spotting; corners bent. Endpapers faintly discolored; later ownership signature on the front free endpaper. Dust jacket spine panel very faintly browned; fold edges worn, particularly near the crown; a couple short closed tears; four pieces of tape applied to the verso, reinforcing the crown, both ends of the front flap and a short closed tear on the bottom of the front panel. An attractive, very good copy.
