Herbert Hoover: Signed First Edition of American Individualism. (New York: Doubleday, Page and Company, 1923), first edition, 72 pages, blue-cloth binding with gold lettering, in slipcase bound in quarter-blue-leather and blue-cloth with gold lettering, 12mo (5.25" x 7.5"). Herbert Hoover was a prolific author throughout his five-decades long career in public service. American Individualism, written after his experiences as head of the Committee for Relief in Belgium (CRB) and Woodrow Wilson's American Relief Administration (ARA) during World War I and during his tenure as Secretary of Commerce under Warren G. Harding, is a straightforward declaration of his personal political philosophy. Hoover's ideas of individual responsibility and the volunteer spirit of helping one's fellows had worked well for him during the war, and would again-as in his relief efforts during the Mississippi Flood of 1927-but would prove tragically ineffectual during his presidency, which was only getting under way when the Great Depression struck. Inscribed and signed on the front endpaper in full: "To Emil Hurja / With the Kind Regards of Herbert Hoover" A bookplate has been attached inside the front cover. The book is in good condition: the front endpapers are separated at the spine, the top right corner of the front cover has a bump, and there is some moderate wear. The slipcase is in very good condition with minor wear to the leather binding.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
