    Manuscript Leaf in Thoreau's Hand

    Henry David Thoreau. MANUSCRIPT EDITION. The Writings of Henry David Thoreau. Boston: Houghton Mifflin & Co., 1906. Manuscript Edition. Nineteen of twenty volumes, lacking Walden volume. Edition limited to 600 copies, this being copy numbered 555, with one manuscript leaf in Thoreau's hand bound into front of the first volume "Concord and Merrimack Rivers," and signed on the first limitation page by the publisher. Frontispieces and illustrated plates. Some volumes with unopened pages.
    Bound in green cloth with paper title labels on spines. Ex-library copies, each with pocket, stickers, barcodes, stamps, call number stickers, and other library markings. Bindings rubbed, unevenly color faded, and soiled; corners bumped, some spines bumped and frayed at head and foot, few joints starting; few cracked hinges, roughly opened pages with tears and minor paper loss in margins, occasional holograph markings, damp stains, minor soiling, light toning; otherwise in very good condition.
    The double sided manuscript leaf in this copy is from Thoreau's journal entry of August 24th 1854, some of which was published with variations in his Journal VI. Manuscript written in ink with light pencil annotations. Leaf split along fold and repaired with small pieces of archival tape.
