Hartmann Schedel. Secunda etas mundi. [Nuremberg: 1493]. Original woodcut world map conceived at the time of Columbus's first voyage, published in the Nuremberg Chronicle (Schedel's Liber Chronicum). Single sheet, two pages (16.5 x 22.875 inches; 420 x 581 mm.). Hand-colored. Restoration along the length of the centerfold as well as to the upper margin of the first leaf (about one inch), affecting the "d" in "Secunda," and the bottom margin of the second leaf, just extending to the bottom lines of text; edges with shallow rippling; just a hint of marginal discoloration. Sophisticated, presents as near fine. With border featuring twelve windheads; three sons of Noah in the corners. Seven woodcut figures on the left edge, fourteen more on the recto of the first leaf (all hand-colored) of antipodean beings, most with mythical origins.

Taken from a Latin edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle, with black letter type below the image and on the verso. 3,500 total copies of the Chronicle were printed, in Latin and German. "[One] of the most popular books of late-fifteenth century Germany" and "the most elaborately illustrated book" of its time, it included the Liber Chronicarum, a "picture book of biblical events, sacred genealogy... and devout biography."--Harley. Schedel's map is adjusted according to its religious context, disregarding Ptolemy's projection in favor of creating a "historical reconstruction showing the ancient world closer to the time of creation." Harley, Maps and the Columbian Encounter, pp. 25-7.
