Harriett Beecher Stowe. Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly. Boston: John P. Jewett & Co., 1852. First edition, first issue in BAL's uncommon "A" binding of original wrappers. Two volumes. Octavo (7.5 x 4.5 inches; 188 x 118 mm.). [iii]-312; iv, [5]-322 pages. With six plates inserted. Publisher's wrappers. Both volumes rebacked, with most of the printed material from the spines preserved (part of "Vol. II." on the spine of volume II is in ink facsimile). Wrappers mounted onto stiff paper. Some toning, rolling to spines, some wear to wrappers (some minor loss of imagery to the front wrapper of volume II). Some toning, occasional soiling, foxing, creasing to text. Page 311/312 of volume I is re-mounted with restoration to the lower inner corner, affecting some text. Bookplates of doctor and author Paul E. Bechet on the inner front wrappers, with related offsetting to title-pages. Still, a very good copy of this title in the most fragile binding. Chemised in quarter morocco slipcase. "The social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since" (PMM 332). BAL 19343; Sabin 92457.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
