Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, [1960]. First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Jennie / with my best wishes / Nelle Lee." Octavo (8 x 5.25 inches; 203 x 133 mm.). 296 pages. Publisher's light green quarter-cloth over brown paper-covered boards, spine lettered in dark brown; in the original first-state dust jacket with the Truman Capote blurb printed in green on the front flap, the Jonathan Daniels blurb on the rear flap and the portrait of Harper Lee by Capote on the rear panel. Spine very lightly rubbed; bottom corners softly bumped. Jacket worn at the spine ends and the edges of the folds; occasional minor creasing and a few short closed tears; a touch of rubbing to the front panel, with a few minor scuff marks; rear panel lightly soiled; price-clipped. A near fine copy in a very good jacket, housed in a custom clamshell case. Winner of the Pulitzer prize for Literature in 1961. Source material for the 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck. Harper Lee, born Nelle Harper Lee, typically reserved the use of her given first name in inscriptions for more intimate associations, this one possibly for Jennie Faulk (also seen Jenny), a relative of Truman Capote's, who helped raise him and lived next door to Harper Lee in Monroeville, Alabama. Additional gift inscription written above the author's: "From - / Ellen Hoskins / July 2 - 1960," dated eight days before the publication date.Auction Info
