    Lovecraft's First Book, in the Rare First Binding, With a Postcard Signed by the Publisher's Secretary

    H. P. Lovecraft. The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Illustrated by Frank A. Utpatel. Everett, Pennsylvania: Visionary Publishing Co., 1936. First edition ("Published, April, 1936" on the copyright page). Twelvemo. 158 pages. Publisher's black cloth with silver lettering, with the title in all capitals (Currey binding A). In the rare dust jacket variant on white paper with silver lettering on the front panel and spine matching that from the cloth binding, with the illustration in yellow-green (Currey dust jacket variant 2). Noticeable dust-soiling and some staining to the book and jacket. One tiny instance of insect damage to the bottom edge. First owner's signature to the front free endpaper ("Richard G. Paxton, Jr."). Dust-soiling to the endpapers, with offsetting to same from the jacket flaps. A mostly clean copy internally. Chip to spine head, not affecting any text. Some short closed tears to the jacket edges, with minor loss at the corners. Significant insect damage to one jacket flap fold. A good copy. Currey, page 263. Accompanying this copy is the rare Errata slip and an Autograph Note Signed from Fantasy Publishing Co. secretary Pauline Bussard (Fantasy was the same publisher's other imprint).

    The note is dated May 7, 1936 on a Fantasy Publishing Co. postcard, is addressed to the original owner of the book whose name is written on the front free endpaper, Richard Paxton, and reads, "Dear Mr. Paxton: / Thank you for your order for a / copy of Lovecraft's book "Shadow Over / Innsmouth." Due to an unreasonable / delay on the part of the printer, this / book will not be ready for mailing / for about a month yet. Your copy will / be forwarded as soon as possible, however. / Very cordially yours / Pauline Bussard, Sec't. / Fantasy Publishing Co."
