Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1846. Folio. With seventy-two hand-colored, copper-engraved maps, including the frontispiece of rivers and mountains. Engraved pictorial title page. Publisher's red half-leather over marbled paper-covered boards with red leather title label on front cover lettered in gilt. Noticeable wear, chipping, and soiling to the binding. Spine and corners partially perished. Heavy toning to the textblock, resulting in somewhat brittle paper. Some creased corners. A complete copy in fair condition.

    An important and scarce atlas, with a number of significant maps: North America with Texas shown as an independent country; a separate map of Texas; the U.S. territory of Oregon extending to the sought-after 54 / 40; the various other American states, many with insets of cities, etc.; separate plans of Washington, Philadelphia, and New York; plus South America and its regions, Europe and its various states, Asia, Africa, and more. Mitchell's publication of the New Universal Atlas of H.S. Tanner and Carey & Hart, with some of the maps bearing Tanner or Carey & Hart copyright notices. Phillips Atlases 3553 (listing under Tanner).
