Inscribed by H. G. Wells, with an Original Ink Drawing to One of Oscar Wilde's Sons

    H. G. Wells. When the Sleeper Wakes. London and New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1899. First edition. Presentation copy, with a humorous drawing of Vyvyan Holland lying in bed and yawning while Wells scolds him (each figure is identified beneath by Wells). Beneath this drawing if a four-line parody of Longfellow by Wells: "Life is real & Life is earnest / Collecting paperweights is not its goal / Bric a brac thou art & to Bric a brac returnest / Was not spoken to the soul." Octavo. [viii], [329], [1, blank] pages. Three plates inserted. Publisher's full red cloth, front cover and spine lettered in gilt. Spine a bit sunned, some rubbing to binding, gutter facing half-title cracked (but no evidence that inscribed page has been inserted), rear hinge starting, overopened a few places in text. Generally very good with a wonderful inscription and drawing and an excellent literary association. Vyvyan Holland (1886-1967), was an author and translator, and the second son of Oscar Wilde.
