DescriptionH. G. Wells. The War of the Worlds, Complete Serialization as Published in Pearson's Magazine, Nine Issues. London: C. Arthur Pearson, April-December, 1897. Nine issues of Pearson's Magazine, April of 1897 - December of 1897. Volumes III & IV– Nos. 16-24; July, No. 19 – Second edition. Octavo. Individually paginated. Profusely illustrated by Warwick Goble. Publisher's pictorial yellow wrappers. Minor to moderate edgewear, chipping to spines and corners with some losses, rubbed and somewhat soiled, intermittent ink marks and stains to wrappers. Internally generally clean and tight; moderate edgewear, intermittent foxing and soiling but chiefly to edges, some pages creased. Housed in custom clamshell case, half brown calf over marbled paper over board, black and green leather spine labels, spine decorated and lettered in gilt. Very good.
An impressive and complete serialized run of the first appearance of Wells' acclaimed story in print. This serialized version preceded the William Heinemann edition in book form by a year; fifteen of Goble's illustrations were later reproduced in the American first edition (New York: Harper & Bros, 1898). This run also includes portions of stories by Rudyard Kipling, Arthur Conan Doyle, Guy Boothby, and more.
