The Very Scarce and Beautifully Illustrated French Edition of War of the Worlds

    H. G. Wells. La Guerre des Mondes. Traduit de L'Anglais par Henry-D. Davray. Édition Illustrée par Alvin-Corrêa. L. Jette-Bruxelles, L. Vandamme & Co., 1906. First French edition and the first illustrated edition, one of 500 copies signed by the illustrator, this being number 191. Large quarto. Approximately 12.5 x 10.5 inches. [255], [1, colophon], [1, blank] pages. With thirty-two lithographed illustrations inserted throughout (reckoned within pagination). Also with numerous intertextual illustrations. Captioned tissue guards. Publisher's original wrappers. Rebacked in full brown calf, original wrappers now mounted onto boards, new endleaves, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Some rubbing and mild wear and creasing to wrappers on boards, upper corner of front board near spine repaired. Some toning and intermittent foxing to text. Overall, a very good copy of this beautiful edition. Now housed in later custom-built cloth clamshell case. Very rare; only two other copies have ever appeared at auction. The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
