    H. G. Wells Writes an Angry Letter
    to a Literary Agent

    H. G. Wells Autograph Letter Signed. Two octavo pages on one leaf of Wells' stationery note paper, 9 x 7 inches, Clarence Gate, July 16, 1932. Very good. Addressed "Dear Mrs. Pearn [Nancy Pearn, a literary agent, founder of Pearn Pollinger & Stefan, who at this time still worked for Curtis Brown, his agent] What is all this nonsense about my writing an Autobiography? How did it arise? I haven't the slightest intention of writing an Autobiography & if I had I shall not entrust the marketing of it to Curtis Brown & Co. Will you please stop [?] this sort of meddling about any [?] perspective work. I [overleaf] must point out that you have no authorization to talk about it in my name, offering books & articles, & then coming to me with proposals. By [illegible] H. G. Wells In plain English please get off my business & keep off it." Vertical and horizontal creases, some toning and rubbing to leaf.
In this Wells is a bit dishonest - this year he had begun working on a two-volume autobiography, Experiment in Autobiography, which would eventually be published in 1934 by Gollancz.
From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells.
