Pre-Publication Lithoprint Issue

H[enry] D[eWolf] Smyth. A General Account of the Development of the Methods of Using Atomic Energy for Military Purposes Under the Auspices of the United States Government. 1940-1945. [Washington, D.C., War Department, August 1945. First edition, pre-publication, one of approximately 1,000 copies distributed. Folio. Approximately 10.25 x 7.5 inches. [193] pages. This copy with the secret page (VI-12) intact (found blank in most copies). Near-contemporary green cloth binding lettered in black. With the original plain wrappers still present (the front folder only states: "Released for Publication _______"). Mounted to a sheet in the binding is the memo advising of the future release of this report, advising the recipients (editors and radio commentators) to not mention anything about this until after 9 pm Eastern Time on Saturday, August 11, 1945. Previous owner's (Kenneth Burlingham) signature on the first flyleaf and the title-page of the actual report). Some very minor rubbing to binding, memo is browned, chipped, soiled, and partially torn away from its mount, minor soiling or offsetting to plain wrappers, occasional thumbsoiling in report. Near fine.

The copies of this report were sent to people in charge of The Manhattan Project, as well as certain media personalities (this copy, with page VI-12 present, containing classified information about plutonium production rates, was most likely given to someone working on the project). It wasn't distributed until after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. PMM 422e.
