    The Pinnacle of Vulgar Realism

Gustave Flaubert. Madame Bovary. Mœurs de province. Paris: Michel Lévy Frères, 1857. First edition with dedicatee's name misspelled, "Senart" for Senard, on the dedication leaf. Two continuously paginated volumes bound in one. Twelvemo. [viii], 232, [233], 490 pages. Extra-illustrated with vignette title and six additional plates from Sept eaux-fortes pour illustrer Madame Bovary de Gustave Flaubert (Paris: Alph. Lemerre, circa 1857-1883) by Émile Boilvin. Handsome full navy crushed levant morocco by Émile Rousselle, boards triple-ruled in gilt, spine lettered and decoratively tooled in gilt in six compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Boards very slightly bowed, light wear to extremities with small chip and minor restoration to crown. Front endpaper nearly detached, two bookseller descriptions mounted to preliminary blank, rubber stamp to lower margin of half-title, small leather bookplate affixed to terminal blank. Lacking original wrappers, the half-title and title pages of second volume and publisher's advertisements. Overall a very good copy of this masterpiece of realist literature.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
