    Gustave Courbet. Autograph Letter Signed. "Gustave Courbet." Two pages (of a bifolium) in French, 5.25" x 8.25", Paris: May 12, [1866].
    In this letter addressed to a "Monsieur le Marquis," Courbet discusses his painting, La femme au perroquet (oil on canvas, 1866), which was the first nude to be accepted by the Paris Salon. The letter also includes a card on which Courbet's names is either handwritten or printed.
    Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) was a French painter who led the Realism movement in 19th century French painting.
    Condition: The letter has a horizontal and vertical fold, with a couple of softer secondary creases from handling; a few small spot stains and specks of foxing scattered across paper; center fold thinned from where letter appears to have been previously tipped to another sheet, with a bit of glue residue and some mild loss to surface of paper along edge of rear page; center fold splitting from top to about two inches down; otherwise good.
