Graham Greene. Brighton Rock. A Novel. London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1938. First English edition. Octavo (7.5 x 5 inches; 190 x 127 mm.). [6, half-title, title and dedication], 361, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's full red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, publisher's device stamped in blind at lower right corner of rear board; all text block edges trimmed; original pink-and-black printed dust jacket. Barely visible dust-soiling along top and bottom edges of boards; minimal rubbing to backstrip with very slight loss to gilt publisher's name at bottom; foot of spine a touch pushed; a few scattered spots of discoloration along joints; handful of minuscule specks of soiling to boards. Normal age toning to edges and interior of text block; bit of speckling along top and fore-edge; a few pages toward end of text block with fore-edges roughened and just starting to fray. Former bookseller's penciled notes at front endpapers. Minor edge wear to jacket with a bit of thinning at spine and flap fold ends, with some tiny soft creases along flap edges and top edge of rear panel; slight wrinkling at bottom of spine; barely visible rubbing to exposed panels; light creasing along joint and flap folds; very short split starting at bottom of front flap fold with two even shorter tears at bottom of front flap; a tiny amount of faint foxing to rear panel. Slight foxing to verso of jacket, with some offsetting from red cloth onto spine and front panel. Virtually fine.

A stunningly clean copy, rare in the bright, original jacket with only one record in Rare Book Hub in a restored contemporary jacket. Housed in custom green cloth chemise in green cloth slipcase with gilt-stamped green morocco spine labels; with chemise and room for first edition (New York: Viking Press, 1938). The novel that cemented Greene's place in twentieth-century literature, and the basis for several theater and film adaptations, including the 1947 film noir with Richard Attenborough as Pinkie. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
