Gore Vidal. INSCRIBED. 1876, A Novel. New York: Random House, [1976]. First edition, first printing. Humorously inscribed by Vidal to William F. Buckley with signature "William de Latouche Clancey" (an in-joke between Vidal and Buckley). Publisher's blue cloth. Fine in dust jacket.

    More Information:

    Octavo. 364 pages.

Enclosed is a chatty letter from agent Rodney Pelter to Mr. and Mrs. William F. Buckley, informing them that he had sent Gore Vidal a copy of Buckley's Saving the Queen, and, in return, Vidal had inscribed this copy of 1876 for the Buckleys. The inscription on the half-title page reads: "Bill and Pat / love / William de Latouche Clancey." William de la Touche Clancey was a character that had appeared in Vidal's earlier novel, Burr, a fairly thinly-veiled parody of Buckley, described rather unflatteringly as a "Tory sodomite" with a tongue that "darts in and out of his mouth like a lizard's catching flies."
