    Fabulous Panorama Spanning Thirty Feet

Giuseppe Rieger. Panorama della Costa e delle Isole di Dalmazia. Nei Viaggi dei Piroscafi del Lloyd Austriaco. Trieste: Litografia Di B. Linassi & Co., 1851. Oblong octavo (9.5 x 6.5 inches). Embossed paper folder. This example remains in remarkable condition, with only three separations to the continuity of the panorama, a six-inch closed tear in one plate, a few small tears in the folds of others, and some scattered foxing. Otherwise it is in very good condition.

In August of 1838 the Austrian Lloyd inaugurated a service from Trieste to the Mouth of Cattaro. In order to illustrate the route, Trieste painter Giuseppe Rieger was asked to reproduce the landscapes and the ports of Istria and Dalmatia. The results were lithographed in parts of approximately 9.5 inches and glued one to the other to form a panoramic view of the journey measuring a fantastic thirty feet when fully extended. Rieger made his illustrations with great attention to detail and included the place names with a distance indication in miles starting in Trieste. Auction records for 1853-dated examples exist, but an 1851 edition is unknown. The sheer size and fragility of the panorama makes the likelihood of survival of any example quite remarkable.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
