Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Lapides Capitolini Sive Fasti Consulares Triumphalesq Romanorum ab Urbe Condita usque ad tiberium caesaram. [bound with:] Le Rovine del Castello dell'Acqua Giulia. [and:] Antichita di Cora. [Paris: Firmin Didot, circa 1836]. Later edition. Three titles in one large folio volume (593 x 425 mm). [1, half title], [1, blank], [1, engraved title to Lapides Capitolini], [1, engraved dedication to Pope Clement XIII], [i-ii, Praefatio], one large folding plate, [1]-53, [1 blank]; [1]-11, [1, blank], nineteen engraved plates; [1]-5 pages with two engraved illustrations, twelve engravings on ten plates. Contemporary quarter red morocco over red pebbled cloth boards, raised bands and gilt titles on spine. Boards and edges rubbed and worn with some abrasions, some scuffing and loss to morocco, edges and corners bumped. Text block edges lightly toned, pages and plates occasionally foxed, marginal dampstain on first engraved title page, five small library stamps from "Biblioteca E. de Ingenieros" and dated "1882." A very good, clean copy.

A superb book combining three works in one volume, each with wonderful large engraved plates: The first listing the inscriptions on the Roman Forum detailing events and personalities during the reign of Tiberius; The second describes the Acqua Giulia aqueduct system in Rome; and the third dealing with the ruins in the city of Cori.

    More Information:

Francesco Piranesi, Giovanni Piranesi's son, took the original copper plates for his father's engravings to Paris in 1800, and sold the plates to Firmin Didot. The complete Didot edition is generally found in twenty-seven volumes.
