George Washington's Official Letters to the Honorable American Congress, Signed by His Grand-Nephew

George Washington. Official Letters to the Honorable American Congress, Written, during the War between the United Colonies and Great-Britain, by His Excellency George Washington, Commander in Chief of the Continental Forces: now President of the United States. Copied, by Special Permission, from the Original Papers preserved in the Office of the Secretary of State, Philadelphia. New York: Samuel Campbell, 1796. First New York edition (previously published in Boston in 1795). Signed by George F[ayette] Washington on both title pages. Two small octavo volumes. 296; [ii], 311, [1, blank] pages. Issued without portraits. Contemporary full tree calf, spines ruled in gilt, with burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels. Some rubbing to joints and edges, bookseller's plates on both front pastedowns, near contemporary neat ink price on front pastedown of Volume I, previous owner's ink signature (mostly erased) on front free endpapers. Some soiling, foxing to text, upper corner of page 183/184 in Volume II lacking (not affecting text), hinges just starting, yet solid. Overall, a fine copy.

George Fayette Washington (1811-1871) was President George Washington's grand-nephew, being the grandson of his brother Charles. Howes W142

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
