"The islands which I am about to describe were not discovered in consequence of any premeditated design; the India Packet, which Captain Wilson commanded, being in a tempest wrecked on their coast..."

George Keate. An Account of the Pelew Islands, situated in the Western Part of the Pacific Ocean. Composed from the Journals and Communications of Captain Henry Wilson and some of his Officers, who, in August 1783, were there shipwrecked, in The Antelope, a packet belonging to the honourable East India Company. London: Printed for G. Nicol, 1788. First edition. Quarto. xxviii, 378 pages. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Captain Henry Wilson, fourteen engraved plates, one fold-out map of the "Pelew Islands and Adjacent Seas", one fold-out view of the Pelew Islands from the observatory on Oroolong. Full calf, rebacked, new spine with leather title label and gilt rules and designs, marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of "Samuel Long" on front pastedown and binder's ink stamp of "D & D Galleries" on verso of front free endpaper. Boards rubbed and scuffed, corners bumped and rubbed; small gap between front free endpaper and front fly-leaf with light glue and paper remnants along the gutter (no apparent missing pages, re-binding error?), minor paper loss to front fly-leaf in corner near foot; small holograph ink initials on verso of front free endpaper and facing front fly-leaf; holograph ink marks on upper right corner of title page cut-off indicating text block may have been lightly trimmed; plate facing page 105 has been lightly trimmed along the image's lower border with minor loss to publishing statement, plate facing page 176 appears trimmed along its fore-edge margin with no loss to text or image. Each plate has dampstaining in its corners with varying degrees of affect to the image, dampstain off-set onto pages adjacent to plates.
