George Herbert. Herbert's Remains. Or, Sundry Pieces of that sweet Singer of the Temple, Mr. George Herbert, Sometime Orator of the University of Cambridge [sic]. London: Timothy Garthwait, 1652. First edition. Contains the second title-page, A Priest to the Temple. [Bound with:] George Herbert. Jacula Prudentum. London: Timothy Garthwait, 1651. This title first appeared as Wits Recreations in 1640. Two sixteenmo volumes bound in one. [lxx], 168; [ii], 70, 171 [sic] - 194 pages. Contemporary full sheep, boards and spine double-ruled in blind. Rebacked, preserving some of the original spine, and a few corners restored. Spine rubbed at edges, some wear and soiling to boards, corners chipped, rear free endpaper chipped at lower corner, endleaves and first and final blanks offset. Several leaves in the front with some worm damage (with some textual loss). Some thumbsoiling in text. Still, very good. Legendary bibliophile and collector A. Edward Newton's copy with his bookplate. Chemised in slipcase.

Herbert's chief work in prose, this title is an instructional tome to country clergymen about their duties and preferred attributes. This work also contains some proverbs, including "All is not gold that glitters."
