One of Only 115 Copies Signed by the Illustrator, Tom Lea

George Catlin. Westward Bound. A Hundred Years Ago. [El Paso]: At The Pass of the North [Carl Hertzog], 1939.

Edition limited to 115 copies, of which this is number 70, signed by the illustrator. Slim quarto. Fourteen pages, printed on one side only. Sketches by Tom Lea.

Gray paper with black titles and yellow paper over boards. Light rubbing to boards and bumping to bottom corners. Original tissue protective cover toned at spine with chipping and tears at edges. Slight toning to spine and top edge, with minor soiling at centerfold. Otherwise a fine copy.

This beautifully executed volume is a very early collaboration between the designer/printer Carl Hertzog and the illustrator Tom Lea. Spare, yet emblematic, the drawings together with George Catlin's lyrical words paint an interrogative journey, leading always Westward. A wonderful early collaboration between the artist and designer that lasted throughout their careers.

Lowman, Printer at the Pass 11.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
