George Borrow. The Bible in Spain. London: John Murray, 1843. First edition. Three volumes. Publisher's green cloth. Moderate shelf wear; spine ends chipped. Estelle Doheny's bookplate. Good.

    More Information:

The Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments of an Englishman, in an Attempt to Circulate the Scriptures in the Peninsula. London: John Murray, 1843.

First edition (Doheny copy). Three octavo volumes. xxiv, 370, [2]ads; viii, 398, [2]ads; viii, 391, [1] ad, with half-titles.

Publisher's dark green cloth with ruled borders on the covers and printed paper spine title labels. All three volumes housed in a single custom green half-leather slipcase with gilt spine titles, five raised bands, and an elaborately protective felt-lined chemise. All three volumes exhibit moderate shelf wear, bumped corners, and noticeable chipping at the spine ends. Previous owner's bookplates attached to the front pastedown and front free endpaper of each volume. Volume I starting at the rear hinge. Volume III would benefit from significant restoration as the spine and rear board are detached. Overall, this is a good set of a classic religiously-tinged travel narrative.

Of special note in this set of Borrow's classic is the gilt-embossed leather bookplate of Estelle Doheny affixed to the front free endpaper of each volume. Doheny was a legendary bibliophile who amassed one of the most important collections of early and rare printed books and manuscripts, the auction of which was a major event in the book world in 1988.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
