DescriptionGeorge Armstrong Custer: An Important 63-Page Handwritten Memoir by Charles A. Varnum, 7th Cavalry Officer After 1872 and Chief of Scouts at Little Big Horn. Varnum was with Reno's contingent, and so survived to write his story. This manuscript in Varnum's hand appears to be either unfinished or incomplete, but covers his life from his youth through fall, 1876. Approximately half of the content deals in detail with events surrounding the famous battle. Many important details are related, as well as a wrenching description of the discovery of the mutilated bodies of Custer's command. Also found in the manuscript is a wealth of descriptive accounts of the activities of the 7th in the west during the years prior to the Little Big Horn campaign.
The manuscript was part of the important personal collection of Dale C. Anderson, auctioned in 1986. Anderson had obtained it from the respected autograph dealer Joseph Rubenfine, and the auction catalog (a copy of which is sold with this lot) includes a lengthy excerpt from Rubenfine's catalog discussing the manuscript, which Anderson believed to have been written sometime shortly after the famous battle and before the Reno trial. (See lot description at HA.com.)
Pages are approximately 7.75" x 10", and aside from some age toning are generally in excellent condition. Minor edge damage to a few of the pages. Black ink handwriting is strong and clear.
