Geoffrey Gambado. Academy for Grown Horsemen, Containing Instructions for Walking, Trotting, Cantering, Galloping, Stumbling & Tumbling. [bound with:] Annals of Horsemanship:

Containing Accounts of Accidental Experiments. and Experimental Accidents, Both Successful and Unsuccessful: Communicated by Various Correspondents.... London: R. Ackermann, 1825.

One twelvemo volume. xxvii, [29]-75; lxxix-xcix, [101]-201 pages, plus one page of directions to the binder for placement of the plates. Illustrated with twenty-seven amusing hand-colored copperplate engravings "by the most eminent artists," including two frontispieces (one a portrait of the author) and an illustrated title page.

Original drab boards with printed paper label to spine. Label rubbed. Binding tender, rear board very loose. Minor occasional foxing. House in a unique gilt-stamped book-backed red morocco and cloth custom pull-off box, with the box opening vertically rather than horizontally. A lovely, near fine copy.

Originally published in 1787 and 1791, these witty guides to horsemanship are presented by Geoffrey Gambado, a Riding Master, Master of the Horse, and Grand Equerry to the Doge of Venice who refers to himself with tongue in cheek as an "accomplished genius" in the ways of the horse. A charming little book. From the Estate of John McLaughlin.
