Garth Williams. Unused illustrations, Charlotte's Web.

Garth Williams. Original preliminary drawings for unused illustrations in Charlotte's Web, 1952: two studies of the fair and one sketch featuring the goose. Pencil on paper. Three sheets, one measuring 9.25 x 7.75 inches and two sheets measuring 10.875 x 8.5 inches. Each initialed by Williams. The smaller sheet of the fair scene has a crease running along the right side, parallel to the edge, not intruding into the image area; the larger sheet with a fair scene is missing the very tip of the lower left corner. Else, all are fine.

Two delightful scenes of the fair that were unused in the book: one with a (quite detailed) layout of the fairgrounds, with Williams' notation "Charlotte Fair," and the other one with a tent and a Ferris wheel in the background and with Wilbur and Lurvy in Wilbur's pen, under the word "HUMBLE" spelled out in Charlotte's web. The third sketch features the goose, in a pose similar to that of the goose on the dust jacket. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
