Ink Drawings for an Unused Chapter Heading, Each Signed Twice by Garth Williams

Garth Williams. Unused illustration, Stuart Little.

Garth Williams. Original preliminary drawings for an unused chapter heading for Stuart Little, 1945: the Littles watch Stuart sleep in his little bed. Ink on paper. Two large sheets measuring 15.875 x 12 inches. Each sheet is signed in full by Williams twice: once in ink below the drawing, and again in pencil at lower right corner, beneath his pencil notations. Some shallow folds and creases. Very good or better.

Williams seems to be unsure of what technique he should use to draw these illustrations for his very first book. He has drawn these in order to get direction, presumably from White and editor Ursula Nordstrom. The drawing captioned "Chapter I heading" contains the notation "Cat not good? Don't like boys face?" The second drawing is captioned "Style No. 2 -- Chapter I heading -- lighter drawing -- people more comic." A notation at the top of the sheet -- in an unknown hand, possibly Nordstrom's -- reads: "Alternate technique not good," with a question mark below the comment. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
