    Studies of Fern

Garth Williams. Studies of Fern, Charlotte's Web.

Garth Williams. Original preliminary drawings for unused illustrations in Charlotte's Web, 1952: studies of Fern. One ink drawing on paper and three pencil drawings on paper. Four sheets measuring 10.875 x 8.5 inches. Each initialed by Williams at lower right. All fine.

This group of drawings shows Williams testing out various faces and personalities for Fern. It is said that he based Fern on his daughter Fiona, and three of these short-haired depictions of Fern do seem as if they were drawn from life. As for the Fern that eventually developed and appeared in the book, E. B. White wrote to editor Ursula Nordstrom: "I think Fern is delightful [...], and I couldn't be happier about her" (Neumeyer, p. 214). From the Estate of Garth Williams.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
