Garth Williams. Personal Notebook with Story Ideas Titled "Badgers / Ideas / + Letters" and "Notes for Adult Books." Blank book" filled with Garth Williams' notes on possible projects. One half of the book, with "Badgers / Ideas / +Letters" on cover, and with "Notes" written in ink on first page; the other half, with book turned upside down and started from the other end (dos à dos )has "Notes / GW" on front, and "Notes for Adult Books" written in pencil on first page. The book itself has on the pastedown: "THIS BELONGS TO: -- GARTH WILLIAMS" followed by his address and phone number at his home in Guanajuato, Mexico.

The "Badgers" section consists of 16 pages of story ideas for children, written in longhand in both ink and pencil by Garth Williams. There are drafts of two or three stories featuring a badger family, with father Trustworthy Badger, mother Sweetly Badger, and baby son Mostly Badger. There is a story titled "Smoke" about Mostly at home alone, left by his parents to be in charge of the house. Trying to be helpful, the baby bear tries to make things better around the house, but, obliviously, ends up making quite a mess. He finds a cigar and decides that, as he's never seen his father smoke a cigar, it will be wasted unless he smokes it himself. He ends up getting sick and almost burning down the house.

The "Notes for Adult Books" consists of 12 pages of story ideas in pencil. The first page has the date 1972, following the title "The Goat Paints a Masterpiece/Gringo & the Goat." This is an outline of a never-published novel about a young world-weary painter/gallery owner who spends significant time in Mexico and keeps inheriting Rembrandts. A goat is involved.

Nothing in this personal notebook of Garth Williams appears to have been published. Notebook is in near fine condition.

Also included in this lot is a copy of the first Spanish-language edition of the book Bedtime for Frances by Russell Hoban, La Hora de Acostarse de Francisca, published in 1996, with colorized illustrations. Fine in dust jacket. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
