Garth Williams' Personal Archive Related to Illustrating Laura Ingalls Wilder's The First Four Years

Garth Williams (American Artist, 1912-1996). Archive of Material Relating to Illustrating the Ninth Laura Ingalls Wilder Book, The First Four Years. [New York and Probably Guanajuato, Mexico, ca. 1970]. Original preliminary pencil sketch for the front cover of The First Four Years (published in 1971 by Harper & Row). Initialed by Williams. Also present is Williams' original pencil sketch of the layout of the home featured in the book, with his initials. Approximately 8.5 x 11 inches. Together with several pages of notes about this book, as well as numerous letters between Williams and his editor at Harper & Row concerning this book and other subjects. Also is a brief correspondence between Williams and the curator of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Homestead in De Smet, South Dakota. The curator, William T. Anderson, had sent two small reference photos for Williams' use (the photos are included). Generally very good. An interesting look at the early stages of one of Williams' most high-profile jobs - illustrating books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
