DescriptionG. K. Chesterton. "The Fairy Tale of Father Brown" Typed and Holograph Manuscript. [London?: circa 1913]. Original manuscript, eighteen unnumbered leaves; six typescript with holograph corrections by Chesterton in pencil and ink; six in Chesterton's hand; six in the hand of a secretary (identified illegibly on a supplied cover sheet). Eighteen letter-sized leaves, lined and unlined (10 x 7.875 inches; 253 x 200 mm.) and one cover sheet on a bifolium of notebook paper. Text on rectos only. Nineteen loose sheets in protective sleeves, side-stitched into black cloth-covered portfolio with flexible boards. Housed in custom black cloth chemise in black cloth-covered slipcase, dark red leather spine labels stamped in gilt. Normal soft age toning; slight rippling from handling; top edges of a few leaves a touch frayed. Persistent ink stains and offsetting marks from rusting paperclips throughout, particularly at first few leaves; a bit of foxing; some bleeding and smudging; fairly small hole toward edge at head of final paragraph of tenth leaf. Light rubbing to slipcase and chemise. Near fine overall, given the nature of this item. Chesterton, a Queen's Quorum and Haycraft Queen Cornerstone author, would go on to publish this story in The Wisdom of Father Brown in 1914, his second collection to feature his titular Roman Catholic priest-detective.
