Frédéric Leclerc. Texas and Its Revolution. Houston: The Anson Jones Press, 1950. First English language edition, limited to 500 copies, of which this copy is unnumbered. 4to. xii, 148pp. Illustrated with facsimile of original French cover. Facsimile of the original folding map (with color). Blue cloth with gilt-stamped spine and front cover. Comes with an overlay/flexible blue cloth slipcase featuring a detail of the map on its front cover. Pages uncut. Front cover has a couple of small stains to blue cloth. Back cover of overlay is sunned. Overall, this is a very good copy.

This is the first English language edition of Leclerc's important account of his visit to Texas, originally published in French in 1840. When the Anson Jones Press of Houston decided to publish an English translation of Leclerc's book, they were unable to locate a copy of the original book -- neither the Bibliothèque Nationale de France nor the Library of Congress had a copy. In an amazing stroke of luck, a Texana collector living in Houston had a copy of the French original (and a signed copy at that), and he agreed to loan it to the publisher for use by the translator, James L. Shepherd, III.

This copy is the Anson Jones edition, and it comes from the library of the gentleman who owned the original Leclerc -- his small name label is affixed to the front pastedown. The book is warmly inscribed to the owner by the publisher, Herbert Fletcher, thanking him for the loan of his copy of Leclerc's original.

The original French language edition of Leclerc's Le Texas et Sa Révolution is also offered in this signature auction. The cover of the original is reproduced in facsimile in the Anson Jones edition, complete with its unique inscription by Leclerc. The owner is again noted in the caption of the facsimile page. This is a remarkable association copy, particularly when paired with the French original, and we are honored by the estate of this remarkable collector to be able to offer both one-of-a-kind items to other discerning Texana collectors.
