DescriptionFrancis Parkman, Jr. The California and Oregon Trail. Being Sketches of Prairie and Rocky Mountain Life. New York: George P. Putnam, 1849. First edition, second issue. Twelvemo. 448, [8, publisher's ads] pages. Frontispiece and vignette title-page. Publisher's full blind-tooled green cloth; spine lettered in gilt. Spine slightly skewed; some loss of cloth at spine ends, general discoloration to backstrip; boards soiled with fair amount of shelf wear, some fraying to cloth; corners bumped. Front hinge repaired; rear hinge split but still sound. Moderate, occasionally heavy foxing scattered throughout; some faint tidemarks. Previous owner signature penciled to front free endpaper, with loss to lower corner. First leaf of publisher's ads inserted at front, ads commence at rear with page 3. About very good. "First edition, much prized by collectors and superior to subsequent issues... the charm of Parkman's diction still remains. The engaging narrative, which reads like delightful fiction, was his actual experience, as he accompanied the expedition"--Cowan. Graff 3201; Howes P97.
