"Francis Cranmer Penrose was the first Director of the British School at Athens. The son of a clergyman, he trained as an architect under Edward Blore before studying mathematics at Cambridge. He first visited Athens in 1845 (when he painted some of the watercolours in the exhibition) to study the architecture as a "Travelling Bachelor" of Cambridge University. With the support of Charles Cockerell and the Society of Dilettanti, he returned to carry out a detailed measurement of the Parthenon and the other monuments, which he published in his "An investigation of the Principles of Athenian Architecture." He was appointed "Surveyor to the Fabric" of St Paul's Cathedral in London (that is, architect responsible for the completion and maintenance of the building) in 1852, and retained this post until he retired, in his 80th year, in 1897. He was an excellent painter of watercolours, being taught the art by Peter de Wint, and also a keen astronomer" (B.S.A.).
