    First edition. English translation by Gilbert Watts of Bacon's De augmentis scientiarum. Quarto. [34], 352, 351-477, [1], [20]. Engraved frontispiece and title page engraved by W. Marshall, both hand colored. Decorative woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces, and large initials. Bound in full mottled calf, rebacked with original spine. Four raised spine bands with gilt lettered title label in compartment. Binding rubbed, scuffed, and scratched. Surface leather losses, boards lightly bowed, corners bumped, and spine crazed. Two concentric circles scratched on front board. Lacking pastedowns and leaf before frontispiece. Later printed leaves used as free endpapers. Textblock cockled.

    Bleedthrough in upper margin of frontispiece from ownership inscriptions dated "1657" and "1712" on verso. Ink ownership inscription dated "1711" on upper margin of title page. Few scattered ink marks and annotations. Small burn hole in text of Ee4 with minor affect. Pages with foxing, minor smudges or stains. Very good.
