    Description

[Roger Payne, presumed]. John Dalrymple. Memoirs of Great Britain and Ireland. London; Edinburgh: W. Strahan & T. Cadell; A. Kincaid, J. Bell, & J. Balfour, 1771. Second edition. Seemingly early fore-edge painting depicting "Limerick and the River Shannon as seen from the Tower of Limerick Cathedral," artist unknown. Quarto. viii, [8], 509 pages. Seemingly a Roger Payne binding; contemporary oxblood calf with faint diced pattern to upper board, elaborately decorated in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with single solid gilt roll to edges. Rebacked with the original spine laid down, corners bumped, moderate edgewear, signs of professional restoration and retooling to corners and edges, somewhat rubbed. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers; armorial bookplate of Syston Park (Sir John Thorold and son) and modern bookplate, "W. A. H." to front pastedown, pencil notations to front and rear free endpapers, endpapers somewhat faded, hinges reinforced. Internally generally clean and tight; all edges gilt; early ink notation and light penciled fore-edge label to front blank recto, somewhat foxed, minor offsetting from green ribbon placeholder. Very good with finely-detailed and well-preserved, though somewhat dulled, fore-edge painting.

Based on previous bookseller descriptions, the early ink inscription, "£11.11.6 / J. T." is likely in the hand of Sir John Thorold the elder, recording an unusually high purchase price for this volume and suggesting the presence of the fore-edge painting at the time of purchase factoring into the additional cost. While there is no direct evidence that this binding is the work of Roger Payne, the tooling is similar to other examples of his work and Sir Thorold the elder is documented as employing Roger Payne to bind several other items in his library (Weber, AD).

    Sir John Thorold (b.1743 - d.1815) - Sir John Hayford Thorold (b. 1773 - d. 1831) - "W. A. H." (no date)- The Book Block, Connecticut (circa mid-1980s) - Christie's (1999) - Christie's (2009) - Randall J. Moskovitz (2009).
