[Rivière]. Oliver Goldsmith; Bolton Corney [editor]. The Poetical Works of Oliver Goldsmith. London: Longmans, Green, & Co., no date [circa 1850]. Fore-edge painting depicting a full suite of playing cards, with numbers below each, possibly by "The Fortune-Telling Artist" but name unknown. Small octavo. 232 pages. Illustrated with engravings, including frontispiece, by C. W. Cope, Thomas Creswick, and others. Contemporary full red morocco double ruled in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with five raised bands and gilt roll to edges. Upper board detached but present, corners just bumped and rubbed, moderate edgewear, somewhat rubbed and darkened to margins and spine. Inner dentelles gilt; marbled endpapers, light pencil notations and binder's stamp, "Bound by Riviere," to front free endpaper verso, rear hinge starting. Folded paper with manuscript fortune telling notes corresponding to the numbered playing cards in the fore-edge painting pasted to front blank recto, brittle, partially split along folds with minor losses and toned but still legible. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt; minor foxing and soiling, minor text block edgewear. Good or better with bright, well-preserved fore-edge painting.
