[Miss Haywood]. Samuel Butler, Zachary Grey [annotations and preface]. Hudibras, in Three Parts. Written in the time of the late wars. London: Vernor, Hood, & Sharpe, et al., 1806. Each volume with multi-paneled, double fore-edge paintings presumably by Helen R. Haywood, with Haywood's distinctive light brown manuscript ink label to front and rear blanks, circa 20th century. Ex-libris Estelle Doheny. Volume I depicting a portrait of the author and a view of Worcester to the right and portraits of Cromwell and Blake flanking an illustration of the defeat of the Dutch fleet to the left, Volume II depicting a portrait of Charles II and Ludlow Castle to the right and a portrait of Clarendon and an illustration of the Fire of London to the left. Two volumes. Octavo. 500, 476 pages. Contemporary full straight grain plum morocco decorated in gilt, spine decorated in gilt, decorative gilt roll to edges. Corners bumped, moderate edgewear, signs of earlier repairs to joints, joint starting, spine rubbed and worn. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers; book label of Estelle Doheny to front pastedown, some offsetting, pencil notations. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt; early ink ownership to front blank, text block unevenly toned, somewhat foxed, minor wear to gilt on edges. Very good or better with bright, finely-detailed, well-preserved fore-edge paintings.

A phenomenal example of some of Haywood's most technically advanced work, these two volumes incorporate both the double fore-edge painting style (with different images each direction) with each fore-edge painting featuring multiple panels, all hidden well under the gilt.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
