    Description

[Miss Haywood]. Izaak Walton. The Lives of Dr. John Donne, Sire Henry Wotton, Mr. Richard Hooker, Mr. George Herbert, and Dr. Robert Sanderson. London: John Major, 1825. Double fore-edge painting presumably by Helen R. Haywood, each with multiple panels depicting portraits of the subjects and locations related to their lives, with Haywood's distinctive light brown manuscript ink labels to front blank and rear blanks, circa 20th century. Fore-edge painting to the right: circular portraits of John Donne, Izaak Walton, and Henry Wotton surrounding an oval framed image of Bocton Hall and church, Malherbe, the historic home of the Wotton family. To the left: circular portraits of Richard Hooker, George Herbert, and Robert Sanderson surrounding and oval framed image of Bishopsbourne, Kent, of which Richard Hooker was the rector and where he is now buried. Each painting with a background of white flowers.

Octavo in fours. 503, [1] pages. With plates and text illustrations. Profusely illustrated. Contemporary full straight grain green morocco double ruled in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with partial decorative gilt roll to edges. Corners bumped and rubbed, moderate edgewear, spine sunned and somewhat worn, joints starting, rubbed and stained. Inner dentelles gilt, lavender endpapers, front hinge weak but holding, rear hinge starting, endpapers somewhat worn and soiled. Internally generally clean, all edges gilt; minor foxing chiefly to front and back of text block, moderate wear to gilt on edges. Very good with charming and finely-detailed, though somewhat dulled, fore-edge paintings. From the Estate of Randall J. Moskovitz, MD, Memphis, Tennessee
