A Three-Volume Set of Commentary of the Gospels, Each with an Excellent Fore-Edge Painting

[Fore-Edge Paintings]. Rev. John W. Burgon. A Plain Commentary on The Four Holy Gospels... Oxford and London: James Parker and Co., 1870. Three twelvemo volumes of a larger set (volumes I, II, and IV (part I)). With excellent contemporary fore-edge paintings of Bethlehem, Damascus ("the street which is called straight"), and Mary's Well at Nazareth respectively. Uniformly bound in contemporary full purple, boards double-ruled in gilt, spines ruled and lettered in gilt, with gilt burgundy lettering labels, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Spines uniformly sunned, some wear to bindings, one hinge just starting. Still, a very good set with lovely fore-edge paintings. Each volume with presentation bookplate from the Bible Class of Rev. R. J. Salmon, Vicar of St. Martins, to him.
