[Fore-Edge Paintings]. Henry Morley. English Writers. The Writers Before Chaucer... London: Chapman and Hall, 1864. First edition. With two lovely split modern fore-edge paintings by Martin Frost (one of the Houses of Parliament, the other of the Crescent at Piccadilly). With signed and dated ("MMVII") bookplate by Frost. Octavo. [xx], 784 pages. Nineteenth-century full blue calf award binding ("Blackheath Proprietary School"), boards double-ruled in gilt, gilt central school medallion on front board, spine elaborately tooled in gilt, with red gilt morocco lettering label, marbled endleaves. Spine worn with some loss of calf (color restored), some rubbing to binding with color restoration, rear hinge just starting. Very good. With armorial bookplate (possibly the Fordyce family) on front pastedown. Housed in modern custom slipcase.
